Amazon, Paypal and Wikileaks - a bad week for the internet and free speech

How many times did somebody tell me that the internet was our last bastion of freedom, in a world that moves closer to being a corporate kleptocracy every day? Well this week the internet was engaged in a global game of cat and mouse as Wikileaks showed us what we already knew, that those in charge of US diplomacy are a two faced bunch of thugs. Now, just in time for a Christmas boycott, Amazon and Paypal pull the plug on Wikileaks web hosting and donations. Joe Lieberman, censor-in-chief of the American Empire, calls the tune and Amazon jumps to his command. All of this because the world is enjoying a load of diplomatic trivia that makes Paris Hilton and the British Royals seem tame by comparison. We Brits now know that the so called "special relationship" is a joke. At least Gordon Brown tried to help Gary McKinnon. The internet will never be the same again after this week. Freedom of speech now depends on the whims of servers such as Amazon, and our money may not be safe with PayPal after all, unless our opinions fall in line with US government policy. 2010 is 1984 and Big Brother PayPal/Amazon is watching you. Facebook deleted an Amsterdam activist page this week too. Unless we are more vigilant the internet will be hijacked by global capitalism, and remember Hillary Clinton has your DNA. Activists need to set up their own independent web servers in countries that still believe in freedom of speech. The know how is out there. All we need is the will to be free. Today I emptied my PayPal account and Santa won't be using Amazon to come down my chimney this year.
