class='posterous_autopost'><p><em>Sarayu Jones is having trouble with her time machine, so she has asked me to post this communication, which I received this morning.<p /></em>Before leaving Burgundy with the time machine I had typed Montpellier and Nostradamus into the search engine, only to discover that instead of taking me back to 1529 in order to find out why the good doctor had been expelled from medical school, as well as perhaps being able to ask him if he had a cure for memory loss and long sentences, I was instead issued with a 2011 TGV ticket and an error message. Upon arrival at the Gare Saint-Roch I received a text message from a Sister Quarantine, requesting that I meet her in le Bookshop on the rue du Bras de Fer for a coffee, to discuss a matter of some urgency. The good sister turned out to be much younger and prettier than I expected, and claimed to have information concerning the murder case I had been involved in, in Amsterdam. Apparently the creepy <a href="http://sarayujones.posterous.com/the-creepy-church-of-aum-baba">Church of Aum Baba</a> was a front for the Nephilim, a bunch of hybrid fallen angels who had been causing mayhem on Planet Earth since Noah's flood. They had corrupted humanity with Nietzsche and Darwin, and were the original master race. Sister Quarantine belonged to a New York convent that had been praying for humanity for over 200 years, apart from Australia, which somehow had got confused with Austria. Perhaps that could explain <em>Sturm und Drang, </em>and all those famous Vienna composers? Quarantine explained that there was no time to lose, as the Nephilim were on her tail. At any time the men in black, in black SUVs, with black Ray Bans and black guns, could arrive and take her out. When I asked why she explained that she was an <a href="http://www.danielletrussoni.org/">angelologist</a>, used to footnotes and long lunch breaks, and when I asked when she said in about 600 pages, including the footnotes. The Flatland of Fiction seemed to be getting weirder with every passing moment. I tried to point out that hybrids were connected with clades and taxa, and that Ernst Mayer had shown that pre-zygotic and post-zygotic mechanisms probably made the Nephilim impossible in spite of Genesis 6, whereupon Sister Quarantine looked gutted and started to cry, saying that hundreds of years of research had just gone down the drain. Never mind, I said. We could always pop out for a baguette, some goat's cheese, and a bottle of Gevrey-Chambertin, whereupon her eyes lit up. Spring has arrived with lots of sun and I&#39;m planning to take some trips out into the country this week, as it will get very hot here during the summer, when I shall head for the hills. This Saturday Angelologist author <a href="http://www.danielletrussoni.org/">Danielle Trussoni</a> will be in <a href="http://www.lebookshop.com/">Le Bookshop</a> at 2pm, so I am reading her book this week. Why stay home with a slice of dry turkey and Nick and Dave on TV, when you can enjoy all the fun of an exotic destination and the excitement of doing something different? This year&#39;s most popular destination turned out to be, of all places, London&#39;s Heathrow Airport. BAA organized a hardcore survival camp that attracted thousands of Brits to their snowy Winter Wonderland campsite. Pontin&#39;s may be almost dead and buried but Heathrow survival was the surprise hit of the season. Sleeping under tinfoil blankets and foraging for food were among the skills that holidaymakers had to learn. Second most popular destination was the Eurostar queue, a flashmob of wannabe train spotters who lined up for hours in the freezing cold to admire the architecture of St Pancras. This is all of course a part of the New World Order plan to get us used to the future when society collapses around our ears in 2012. &quot;Witness the apocalypse. Come to Kings Cross. To keep warm I am drinking plenty of strong Belgian beers and eating a lot of chocolate. This coming Tuesday I plan to celebrate the solstice with a friend in the country. There will also be a lunar eclipse so it should be a good day to meditate and turn within. As I head south for a quieter and warmer life, I leave behind many friends and memories. This city has changed much since I first arrived here over ten years ago. The alternative scene is much smaller, the politics are nastier, the coffee shops are under threat of being for Dutch folks only, and I am older and less inclined to attack the giant windmills. It is time for this Don Quixote to find a home village in the mountains, somewhere near fields of lavender and olive trees, where time moves more slowly. There will be more food and good wine on these pages in the near future, and less of the crazy noise of a collapsing civilization. I am downsizing and opting out of the grid, and learning how to grow potatoes and choose varieties of pumpkin seeds. Assange's bail conditions include surrendering his passport, a curfew, and an electronic tag. Now Sweden is to appeal against the decision, so Julian will not be released tonight. He has not been charged with any crime. This is a blatant abuse of the EU extradition system that NewLab David Blunkett agreed to. So British justice is now made in Sweden, where they make all that wobbly furniture, a so-called neutral country, that is in fact the poodle of the US government. That is the basis for a reinstitution of rape charges against WikiLeaks Assange that is destined to make Sweden and its justice system the laughing stock of the world and dramatically damage its reputation as a model of modernity. Sweden’s Public Prosecutor’s Office was embarrassed in August this year when it leaked to the media that it was seeking to arrest Assange for rape, then on the same day withdrew the arrest warrant because in its own words there was “no evidence”. The damage to Assange’s reputation is incalculable. More than three quarters of internet references to his name refer to rape, although in fact this is not what he is accused of. The chances of a fair trial in this case are so close to zero that we can only hope that the British judge refuses to grant extradition. Many are saying that this is the Titanic moment for the internet, when we must fight for the right of the people to know what is done in their name. Joe Lieberman is already making accusations against the New York Times. At least we know that the US dirty tricks department, with its mainstream propaganda and tax dollars, is on a witch hunt. It is a good day for divination, and as I laid the cards on the evening of Halloween I was surprised at the synchronicity of picking the Hermit. In the 15th century Visconti-Sforza deck the wise old man is carrying an hourglass, symbol of time, Kronos and Saturn. In the Tarot of Marseilles he carries a lantern, and in the Rider-Waite the lantern contains a star. The earliest hourglass appears in the 1338 fresco <i>Allegory of Good Government</i> by Ambrogio Lorenzetti. Written records from the same period mention the hourglass, which appears in lists of ships stores. As the year retreats into the time of the Otherworld, the light is to be found within. Today is the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Dead">Day of the Dead</a> in Mexico, when we honour the ancestors. His prose is apparently pretty grim, and I for one will not be joining the queue to buy a copy, but&nbsp;still no sour grapes on a sunny evening. Yet do books have a future, or will they be antiques a few years from now?&nbsp;&nbsp;The oldest printed book can be seen in the British Museum. It's&nbsp;the<em> Diamond&nbsp;Sutra</em> and came out in AD 868. That was over a thousand years ago, and in the meantime we have the iPad and the Kindle, and the ebook is about to take off as a consumer product. The speed with which technology is developing, and the dawn of cloud computing mean that I can now carry a whole library in my pocket, where once there was a Penguin. Something tells me that some day soon my book collection will be a shelf full of valuable antiques that I will treasure for sentimental reasons. My time machine so far has a laser, a quantum computer, some psychedelic trance medicine and a supercool computer nanochip that is small enough to accelerate to the speed of light. Recently I saw the dawn as the sun spread its first rays to tell me it was on its way. Looking back over the past few years, searching for words that can tell my own story in a way that would do it justice, I find myself caught between many contrasting images, some happy, some sad, some private and personal, some a part of our shared timeline, our restless zeitgeist. Those first rays of the sun seemed to be angels, messengers of a brighter future. In the past few years I have lost a few good friends to the grim reaper, some by their own hand. One day my time will also come. A keyboard and a computer screen are the bridge I use to etch some graffiti on the wall before I go. What do I believe? What value does my story have? Does sharing it add value to the vast pile of information already out there? That is up to you to decide. As we live each day we win and we lose. We fall in love and find ourselves alone again. We grow old and look back in anger, till we learn the grace to look in the mirror with a sense of humor. I am a believer in this beautiful Mother Earth that gave me life. She is old, wise and much abused by her many children. My life is at a turning point, not for the first time. Over the years I have played many roles on the stage of the world, not all of them worthy of repetition. Much of the drama was a tragedy, most was in the form of comedy known as farce. Now I am holding a tabula rasa with an empty heart, waiting for the dawn to come again, waiting for the angels of light to drive away the darkness. Music has always played a big part in my life. The sun was shining. The invited guests were assembled on the lawn of 10 Downing Street. London was excited as the Queen&#39;s fifth cousin tied the knot with the half Dutch leader of the LibDems, after getting the Monarch&#39;s permission to marry. Is it true love or a marriage of convenience? Today nobody seemed to mind as the political map of Britain was redrawn. It was a peaceful revolution, just like the last Dutch one in 1688, and if all the details of the coalition agreement bear fruit, today could have just as many far reaching consequences. Compromise replaces confrontation in the British political landscape. ID cards will be scrapped, there will be no third London Heathrow runway, and there will be a referendum on proportional representation. It has been a most remarkable couple of days. We now have a coalition dedicated to the national interest, in a time of economic crisis. Let&#39;s hope that the marriage is as successful as the wedding. David Cameron and Nick Clegg have a tough job ahead. I wish them well. We talked about Google and Facebook, Jesus and angels, the ups and downs of the economy, and about house hunting in Amsterdam. My plan was to stay for an hour or so, then catch up on my email. Instead I sat there all evening. We spoke in English, Dutch and German. People from all four corners of the world were there. It was a typical Amsterdam gathering, of the kind that I have been to many times before. Yet today there was an openness and a good spirit in the air that was tangible, which seemed to be picked up by everyone present. It was a good meeting, simple, honest and warm. It was quality time, that left me with the impression that this is what life is all about. No matter how hard times are, the spirit never leaves us. Maybe we get confused because we are too busy or stressed out to notice its presence. That is why moments like this afternoon are precious. This radio station is unique, and the proposal simply serves to indicate a very limited understanding on the part of BBC management of the true cultural value and diversity of the music that is represented by the station.</div> <div class="gmail_quote"> <div class="h5"> <div class="gmail_quote"> <p>The immensely high artistic quality of modern British music should be granted greater recognition and support from public service broadcasting, whereas the current proposals only serve to marginalize one of our most meaningful and relevant arenas of artistic endeavour. I cannot help but conclude that the management decisions leading to this proposal have been made as a result of a dramatic underestimation and misunderstanding of the importance of modern British music, which should be championed as a cultural achievement of global importance. Britain is a world leader in the generation of new music, and the intensity of commitment and creativity that modern British musicians undertake in producing their work is easily comparable with more established forms of music and art. The presence of 6 Music has undoubtedly been an important component in the resurgence of new British music over the last few years. Equally, 6 Music serves to introduce British listeners to new music originating from overseas, and therefore to stimulate creativity through the synthesis of other music. Rather than closure, the BBC should show the courage to give Radio 6 even greater freedom to develop its own distinctive environment.</p> <p>The dated terminology of 'pop music' is increasingly meaningless to listeners with a true interest in the full diversity of British music, and simplistic arguments framed within the context of meeting the supposed requirements of a 'pop music audience' appear painfully out-of-touch. Modern music has evolved into a sophisticated range of domains, the diversity and innovation of which has never been satisfactorily addressed by the homogenized output of Radios 1 and 2, and indeed any commercial radio stations of which I am aware. It is very difficult to envisage how such stations could possibly be seen as a substitute for the services that 6 Music provide, except by decision makers that do not appreciate the complex array of groundbreaking music originating from Britain. Unlike 6 Music, other stations are not dedicated to promoting and providing information about new music - 6 Music listeners require a service that can fulfill their more demanding interests, as they are interested in hearing the work of innovative artists, and are not satisfied with being mere consumers of standardised output produced for mass markets, as is typically supplied by more mainstream stations, where in truth the quality of the music aired is often of minor concern to the producers and controllers of those stations.</p> <p>6 Music provides an invaluable community focus for listeners that are truly interested in music, and is an essential forum for supporting innovative British artists. I request that the BBC Trust gives serious consideration to this perspective, and can consequently undertake to oppose ratification of the proposed closure of the station. Jon, have you ever heards of the Brits abroad? We are called expats, and we prefer the BBC, to say Fox News, as a rule. The wonders of the internet make it possible for me to listen to BBC Radio 6 music online here in Amsterdam. You did mention the word online in your interview, so I presume that you know what I'm talking about. As for the folks in "Genghis Khan Land," maybe visiting the BBC website might be interesting for them too, and a good way to promote Britain overseas, or should they just be allowed access to American free content? Why not sell Radio 1? The international Red Cross said up to 3 million people could be affected.The quake crumbled Haiti's presidential residence, the National Palace, but Haiti's ambassador to Mexico, Robert Manuel, said the president, Rene Preval, and his wife had survived. He had no details. We could still have wheat and other crops, but you could cut these between woodland areas in small squares, as they actually grow better this way. Having &lsquo;gardens&rsquo; instead of farms seems like a good idea to me - it gives attention to detail, which is extremely important. And it&rsquo;s probably what our ancestors did - after all, they couldn&rsquo;t use a tractor, could they!? The country is flat and has great cycle paths, with special direction signs, so it's just about impossible to get lost. Other countries also need to follow Holland's example, and build better and safer cycle paths. The solstice celebrations are in full swing. Apparently Solstice Eve was quite a party, so Sarayu tells me. They had a bonfire and fireworks outside Ye Olde Oake, and everyone drank far more mead than they probably should of. When I went round the pub yesterday evening, they were still having a jolly time, singing and dancing, and this evening we shall all be waiting for the three stars to rise and for Venus to appear on the horizon. It is the sacred moment when Ceridwen does the ancient spiral dance, and sends her spirit to the Underworld to prepare for the return of the King, Llewellyn the Old One. At the moment everyone is preparing a great feast with plenty of roast pumpkin, onion and garlic soup and lots of chocolate cookies. Nobody eats meat here. They have loads of different goat&#39;s and sheep&#39;s cheeses, all of which are very delicious. Sarayu and Riglet have managed to build a one way communication system, using a HTC Hero running Android, that Riglet has modified using some of Marvin&#39;s quantum sub ether universal communications technology, known as Direct Infinite Communications Ether, or DICE. Perhaps mon Dieu really does play dice after all? We can send stuff out, but Ceridwen will not allow any incoming messages, as she says it could open up a wormhole to the Otherworld. The present church dates from 1639, and the entrance is through a house door on the Singel. It belongs to the <a href="http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doopsgezinde_Gemeente_Amsterdam">Doopsgezinde Gemeente Amsterdam</a>, who were not allowed to show openly that they had built a church in those days. It was a lovely evening, and I met some old friends and made some new ones. I decided that I would spend Christmas Day quietly at home, just like last year. As Hugo Chavez said, if the planet were a bank we would have saved it already. The sum of money President Obama offered in his speech yesterday, compared to the help given to the bankers, was a pathetic bit of small change. The spectre of the failure to reach an agreement, that will help to start to reverse the effects of global warming, will come back to haunt him. Yet it is not only America that is to blame. All of us, one way or another, share some part of the responsibility. Copenhagen is dead and buried. Now we must move on. It is at the grassroots that change will come. The daily actions of billions of people are what will make a real difference. A clear message must be sent to those in power, and the dubious lobbies that corrupt their every action, that enough is enough. It is time for real change. We need to consume less, and&nbsp;to invest in sustainable technologies on a massive scale. We need to reject the rapacious free market ideology that has been a major cause of environmental degradation and poverty. Only by tackling poverty and preserving biodiversity can we rescue something from this debacle. Business as usual, on Wall Street, as well as on Main Street, is no longer an option. Sadly Obama showed today that he is a greenwash president, and many of those who cheered him, including myself, on the day of his inauguration, must&nbsp;now be bitterly disappointed. The transparency of independent media has exposed this farce for what it is. Mother Earth is old and patient, yet her patience is not inexhaustible. This climate conference was about us as a species, and our inability to transcend our evolutionary origins. Let it be a wake up call for all those who care about our future. The journey is only beginning. Watching the Copenhagen climate summit fall apart is a saddening spectacle. Heavy handed Danish police tactics outside reflect the deadlock inside. There now seems no chance of any sensible agreement coming out of this conference. Perhaps failure will concentrate the minds of those with the power to make a difference. Perhaps the prospect of failure will be enough to snatch a last minute deal. Whatever happens, Copenhagen is the beginning of the struggle to combat the effects of climate change, not the end. This is not a trade conference. It is about our future, and our children&#39;s future. Evolution did not equip us well to deal with problems of this magnitude. Too many alpha male monkeys stand in the way of common sense. The US will have to abandon its obstructive tactics. It is the nation that carries the main responsibility for the present situation. China is on track to be the future major polluter, and the Chinese themselves are very aware of it. The Chinese know how to cope with problems on a vast scale. Their cooperation is vital to finding a solution. As for Europe, we can only hang our heads in shame at the way that Denmark has handled the organization of this conference. Excluding NGOs such as Friends of the Earth, and bashing the skulls of peaceful protesters, is not the best example of  democracy at work in a continent that has a history of humanism and individual justice. Preventive police detention is the thin edge of the wedge of fascism. The people of Africa and the developing world, the poor, the excluded, the children who are yet to be born, and those who need our support to take action to save our planet, deserve better. I would not like to be in President Obama&#39;s shoes this week. Much is expected of him, yet his hands are tied behind his back by the US Congress and its lobby system, much as the hands of demonstrators were bound by the police. Yet despair is not an option. We must act. We must change. We can change. The world needs to take steps to limit temperature rises to 2C, an aim that will require global emissions to peak and begin falling within the next 5-10 years. A bigger rise of 3-4C — the smallest increase we can prudently expect to follow inaction — would parch continents, turning farmland into desert. Half of all species could become extinct, untold millions of people would be displaced, whole nations drowned by the sea. The controversy over emails by British researchers that suggest they tried to suppress inconvenient data has muddied the waters but failed to dent the mass of evidence on which these predictions are based.</p> <p>Few believe that Copenhagen can any longer produce a fully polished treaty; real progress towards one could only begin with the arrival of President Obama in the White House and the reversal of years of US obstructionism. Even now the world finds itself at the mercy of American domestic politics, for the president cannot fully commit to the action required until the US Congress has done so.</p> <p>But the politicians in Copenhagen can and must agree the essential elements of a fair and effective deal and, crucially, a firm timetable for turning it into a treaty. Next June&#39;s UN climate meeting in Bonn should be their deadline.
